Hang ‘Em Right

There are a few more things to consider when hanging baskets for display. If the basket is a houseplant, or will be spending much time indoors, light is crucial. While many houseplants prefer the shadowy environment found indoors (that’s why we call them “house-plants”), all but the most reclusive need some level of sunlight. Orchestrate your indoor plants around a south or southwest facing window, if possible. Arrange those with the greatest craving for sunlight nearest the windows and those that have it made in the shade further back.

Another consideration for indoor hanging plants is drippage. Few plants will tolerate standing in water, so good drainage is essential. Be sure to either position hanging houseplants so that excess water drainage will not ruin carpets and floors, or rig a drip saucer into the hanging arrangement.

Finally, never overestimate the strength of your ceiling. Don’t hang baskets from phalange-type ceiling hooks, even if the manufacturer says they will bear the weight. The manufacturer isn’t guaranteeing your ceiling — just the hook! Locate a ceiling joist with a stud finder (or tap along the ceiling every few inches until you locate the joist) and affix a sturdy hook directly into the solid lumber. Another solution is to locate a stud in the wall and install a strong bracket from which to suspend the hanger. Stairwells, rafters, and strong window frames also make good choices from which to hang baskets.

When hanging outdoor baskets consider these guidelines. As for indoor plants, be sure that the light level is appropriate for the plant (or plants) in the basket. The problem outdoors is usually just the opposite of indoors — rather than not getting enough light, try to position the basket so it won’t be fried by direct sunlight. Afternoon sun is the strongest, so if possible, arrange planters so that they receive morning sun, with some afternoon protection. Refer to Recommended Varieties to see which plants prefer more light than others. But even sun lovers, when grown in containers, require lots of moisture, so position baskets where it is convenient for you to water regularly. Finally, be sure the support is strong enough to hold the basket.

Where and at what height you hang baskets can be used to striking advantage. By hanging several baskets in a row at varying heights you can divide a room or section off a corner of a covered deck or patio. Create a circle, stairstep effect, or spectacular entry-way, by strategically arranging baskets.
